The Dinuba High School Homecoming football game wrapped up a week of dress-up days and lunchtime activities. During halftime, Eric Contreras and McKayla Soto were crowned the DHS Homecoming King and Queen 2024.
This year’s homecoming candidates included Jeremiah Domingcil and Savannah Peters, sponsored by the band, Aaron Ayala and Maria Reyes sponsored by the Freshman class, Sal Sandoval and Michelle Sandoval sponsored by Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), and Eric Contreras and McKayla Soto sponsored by the Senior class.
The theme for homecoming this year was “Empchella,” a take-off on the Coachella music festival. Candidates and students displayed their school spirit by participating in the daily dress up days: your favorite music genre (Monday), me and my twin (Tuesday), Wild West vs. West Coast (Wednesday), your favorite decade (Thursday), and finally, dress like you are going to a concert (Friday). During lunchtime, the candidates were put to the test, participating in activities such as Guess the Song, cornhole, and a “puddy” eating contest. It consisted of the girls feeding their partner applesauce while blindfolded.
The homecoming rally took place in the Claude Hebert Stadium Friday after the fourth period. Classes and clubs presented floats with music themed skits to coincide with the “Empchella” theme. The winners of the best float/skits were announced once the rally was over. First place went to the band and their candidates Jeremiah Dominical and Savannah Peters. Their float/skit represented anthems from the 90’s. Second place went to the Senior class for their Coachella line-up float and dance. Third place went to FCA for their tribute to the West Coast float. FCA’s candidates, Sal and Michelle, were also awarded the top prize for having the best dressed outfits for homecoming week as well as winning the most lunchtime activities.
“I feel like we did our best,” said Michelle. “After all the hard work we have been doing for the past month I would say has been great!”
“I think that it went really good actually,” McKayla said of their rally performance. “I think that everyone liked the part where Eric was shaking his butt so I would say it was a success. It was mostly about us having fun in the end.” She also stated, “I feel like I’m more excited than anything for tonight. Honestly just going under the swords I’m excited for!”
The candidates were all hopeful of winning the crown, although all stated they enjoyed the process and work that went into it. Jeremiah and Savannah expressed, “We’re really doing it just to have fun; we’re not really in it to win it.” Sal and Michelle agreed, “No matter what, it was fun to do.” Aaron and Maria added, “Everything was last minute but we had fun doing it!”
The homecoming football game was the annual Pink Out game for Breast Cancer Awareness, sponsored by the Med Academy. The Dinuba football team played against Tulare Western High School.
During halftime of the Varsity game, last year’s homecoming queen and king, Emmarie Rico and Diego Tuttle, came to pass down the crown to this year’s winners, Eric Contreras and McKayla Soto.
A big congratulations to them and to all of the participants this year!
