Dinuba High School girls’ tennis came away with a 6-3 victory on August 25th, showing off the growth and determination on the courts. Varsity, with a strong team, stood out with strong efforts and skill, while JV showed good potential, proving the team is making strides early in the season.
Fadra Kiehn, the head coach, said the biggest challenge for her players right now is footwork, especially making sure they are ready for the ball instead of reacting late. “Our biggest challenge right now is backing up before the ball bounces,” Kiehn stated. Even with that challenge, the team stayed composed and consistent through their matches; they refused to play down to the level of their opponents and worked hard despite the 100° heat.
The team has also welcomed a new JV coach, Vincente Delgado, for this season. Delagdo said his voice was to create a supportive environment for players. “I want them to have fun and I want them to have a good experience on the squad.” He explained he wants the girls to feel safe, enjoy learning, and leave each practice knowing that they improved.
“Just participating and improving on little aspects of the game, that’s a rewarding experience,” said Delgado.
One of the highlights comes not from the scores but from a moment of sportsmanship. During a JV match, one of Dinuba’s players, Ashley Martinez, paused and helped her opponent understand the rules of the game. Kiehn said she was proud to see one of her athletes demonstrate that kind of leadership and patience while competing.
While the victory was a big step, Kiehn hopes her team focuses just as much on their growth as on results. “I really just want the girls to see that they’re getting better and that they can see that there’s improvement,” she said. For now, the win is proof that the work they have put in is paying off, as they are starting the season well.
Looking ahead, Kiehn’s goals for the season go beyond the scoreboard. She hopes the team builds confidence, strengthens their bond, and most importantly remembers this year as a fun and supportive experience, one where every player feels like they are a part of a family.
