On September 1st, DHS started After-School Tutorials. This program allows students to come in for an hour after school, from 3:15 to 4:15, for help with work or just a place to study. They provide transportation home after tutorial with the bus departing at 4:20. Please ensure you obtain a bus pass at the Admin Office. It’s open to anyone Monday through Thursday, with a teacher for every core class and some electives, such as the new Tech Theater (every Tuesday) and 3D Printing (every Wednesday).
Assistant Vice Principal, Mrs. Valencia, explains the goals and hopes for the program. “Every classroom should have a flyer or every teacher was given a flyer to put up in their classroom to promote tutorials. We’re using Parent Square and Student Square and I make sure we post it to remind students of tutorial on a weekly basis. If a student ever sees their counselor, counselors have their flyers they give out to students, and so we’re promoting it more, so there is more attendance to tutorial.”
For Freshmen who may not understand how After School Tutorial works, it’s extra help being offered to all students. Mrs. Valencia explains, “I would definitely ask the student what classes they’re struggling in and plan out what Monday would look like, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and pick a tutorial that would benefit them in the classes that they’re struggling in or classes that they have questions in or just if they wanted to check in.”
Tutorial can be helpful for those who can use some extra help. It’s also important to acknowledge that the teachers who stay after school are volunteering for all these students so they can get the help they need and have a successful school year.
