“Are we even going to get to go to the new High School?”
This is a question that you have most likely asked yourself if you’re a student at Dinuba High School. Speaking as a student, I sure hope so! The current campus is withered, old, and while filled with culture and history, its walls have been outgrown.
In my four years at Dinuba High School, I’ve seen the current campus go down in quality. Bathroom stall doors being dysfunctional, soap dispensers being empty, old classrooms that have lost their charm and feel more like hospital rooms, all products of the high school being run down over time. You ask the average student what they think about the high school and the most consistent answer you will get is that “It’s alright.” It’s about time students have access to a campus that reflects a more encouraging learning environment because right now, most students aren’t eager to learn on the campus we are on.
Don’t get me wrong. I am not saying that Dinuba High is a terrible high school. I actually believe that despite the campus itself, our school is a good one. The teachers I’ve had have mainly been very respectful to students, run engaging classrooms, and generally genuinely care about your education and future. The staff is incredible as well, something I’ve come to develop great respect for this year with the school providing to seniors so much information about colleges and universities, resources that we are truly lucky to have.
All of the good parts of Dinuba High should be carried over into a bigger and better learning environment. The new campus is something that will serve to better the high school experience for the kids in our community as well as provide more opportunities on a clean slate. The information about the new school campus makes me incredibly enthusiastic about the new things we will have access to. The addition of the Student Union is something that will definitely improve the quality of life on campus. Not only will school lunches be made to a higher standard, but we are also promised to have nicer spaces to spend our time in. A new cafeteria that will have windows and a food court will foster a better sense of happiness in contrast to our current one which is sealed off from sunlight and lacks expression. The library and media center will also be a space made available for students to spend their lunch in and hangout with friends or to use to study after school. This combined with the other new facilities will elevate the Dinuba High experience to a higher level where students like me, who feel less than optimistic on this campus, can feel lucky to attend. Whether you are in band, choir, drama, clubs, construction, Med Academy, or just attending core classes, you are accommodated for.
Of course, this opinion should be taken with a grain of salt given that the new campus is not yet accessible. However, these wishes and feelings about the new campus hopefully come to fruition. If they do, my only complaint will be that I didn’t get to go to high school there longer.
