310720 people are diagnosed with breast cancer yearly seen by the American Cancer Society but the Med Academy students have strived to spread awareness. The Med Academy students are leading efforts to help raise money and awareness of breast cancer in the community. Well known for their dedication, the Med Academy students “pink out” the Claud Hebert Stadium on October 11th to spread awareness to the community.
In preparation for the big football game, the Med Academy students spent time decorating the stadium in pink to spread awareness for breast cancer. Many different decorations helped ensure that everyone in the stadium saw the importance of breast cancer awareness by student-led teams. They made posters and helped paint decorations for the stadium.
The Med Academy’s efforts included the sale of Breast Cancer Awareness shirts which is a large part of what they do to spread awareness and help the cause. Science teacher and advisor, Rose Cordova-Franks oversees the initiative and worked with students to sell these shirts to help spread awareness, with some proceeds going towards The American Cancer Society. The shirts not only help raise money but also act as a visual symbol of the school’s commitment to the cause.
“I remember my first few years just seeing the magic unfold and everything it took to make it happen was inspiring! That students, staff, and members could come together on one evening and respect the lives of these people who have had cancer or are going through treatment and just seeing everyone being on the same page for one night,” said Mrs. Cordova-Franks.
In addition to these activities, Med Academy students had opportunities to hear directly from breast cancer survivors through guest speakers such as Chelle Protzmen. These speakers share their personal stories, offering insights into their journeys with the disease. For students, it’s a reminder of what breast cancer can do to someone and shows the strength of survivors and the impact of their stories. For the students it’s not just a lesson; it’s an inspiring reminder of the strength, courage, and determination of the survivors.
Through their collective efforts, Med Academy students demonstrate that raising awareness about breast cancer goes beyond just wearing pink—it’s about educating others, supporting survivors, and contributing.
“Our goal is to educate our students and the public about breast cancer and early prevention and that is the key that’s what they showed that early prevention is what helps people heal from it,” said Mrs Pennebaker.
Their commitment to this cause shows the power of community and the impact that even small actions can have a big impact in breast cancer awareness. Together, they have helped inspire others to stay informed, and take action.
