Lil Baby’s fourth studio album, “WHAM” has just been released and has received some negative reactions from the media. “WHAM” has no shortage of star features such as 21 Savage, Travis Scott, Young Thug, Future, and many more. Going into the album, Lil Baby had plenty of roll out posts to hype up his album; he even announced he would be dropping a second album after “WHAM” titled “Dominique” which is set to drop in February. But after his previous release, his competency has sparked significant debate among fans and critics alike, with many questioning if Lil Baby’s sound has grown to be repetitive.
Many listeners feel like Lil Baby hasn’t evolved, he has had the same sound about money, hustling, and fame. This verbatim has not aged well for Lil Baby. It has gotten old and mundane and many say it sounds uninspired, a surprising turn for an artist that was so dominant in the rap industry.
Despite the negativity “WHAM” does have a few standout moments. Tracks like “Stuff” (ft. Travis Scott), you can’t mess up a song with Travis on it, we also have “Dum, Dumb, and Dumber” (ft. Young Thug & Future) this track delivers the high energy we all except from songs with these guys on it. Lastly, on the track “Everything Costs” Lil Baby reflects on his sacrifices and struggle with fame. These moments show Lil Baby can still have some good songs, even if the rest of the album struggles to keep up.
The harsh reality is that Lil Baby isn’t taken as seriously as he was back in his good days, fans feel they know exactly what his music will sound like before listening to it, the flow, lyrics, same beats, it’s like he is stuck on auto pilot and is just releasing whatever to get money. That excitement people had for his music isn’t there anymore, he has the talent but if the same trend continues then his days as a top artist may be numbered. Overall, “WHAM” receives a score of 3 out of 10. It’s just not a great product, lacks memorable tracks and every song sounds alike to me, maybe we will get a better product on his album “Dominique” dropping later on.
