On Friday, March 27th, the old DHS Campus held its fourth annual Special Olympics. The event kicked off with a torch run by the participants, cheered on by the police force, visitors on motorcycles, and student volunteers.
There were many schools participating this year, including:
- Dinuba High School
- Washington Intermediate School
- Orosi High School
- Exeter High School
- Farmsville Junior High School
- El Monte Middle School
- Culter Elementary School
- Jefferson Elementary School
- Wilson Elementary School
- Roosevelt Elementary School
There was also Dinuba and Exeter CBI (Community-Based Instruction) participating.
Many came to cheer on the competitors, including the DHS choir and band, who performed throughout the games and at the national anthem. There was also the Cinco de Mayo and Miss Dinuba courts there to congratulate the participants.
Many students from DHS volunteered to help the event run smoothly, from assisting participants to overseeing the overall organization of the different activities.
There were also many snacks for those who came to support, such as free Dutch Bros, Cortez Shaved Ice, Munchies, Churros, and the Freshman Council was selling snacks and pizza.
The Special Olympics is truly an exceptional occasion, as the Olympics are held for those whose disabilities are considered mild to moderate and who cannot participate in school or any other events. The Special Olympics is a time for these participants to involve themselves with the community and celebrate each other.
