The Dinuba High School basketball homecoming was a wrap-up of dress-up days, lunch activities, and memories.
This year’s basketball homecoming candidates included Aiden Alejandro and Hazel Moreno, sponsored by the sophomore council; Jimmy Hignojoz and Madison Avila, sponsored by the senior council; and finally, Daniel Sanchez and Anahi Moreno, sponsored by the junior council.
This year some things are a bit different. Due to the LA wildfires, the homecoming candidates will be doing something special and are competing against each other in a fundraiser to see who can raise the most money. All the money collected will go to people who have lost their homes in the LA fires. The candidates who raise the most money will earn an extra number of votes that will go toward the final counting. The theme for this year’s basketball homecoming is Viva Dinuba. Candidates and students showed their school spirit by participating in the daily dress-up days: All Nighter, Pajama Day (Monday), Casino Lights, Wear Neon (Tuesday), Circus Circus, wear a wacky outfit (Wednesday), No Photos Please, dress as a photographer or celebrity (Thursday) and tomorrow (Friday) is Caesars Palace, wear your emperor gear. During lunchtime, the candidates were put to the test by playing games such as an “obstacle course,” balloon popping, and potato sack racing.
“I feel like this is a new opportunity. Just being able to do something new, get out of my comfort zone, and have people vote and support me. I’ve never had that, so to have that is really nice.” said candidate Hazel Moreno.
“I’ve known him (Jimmy) since 7th grade, and we’ve always talked about running for homecoming, so now we’re finally living out our dreams,” said candidate Madison Avila.
When asked how homecoming has been, king candidate Daniel Sanchez said, “Great, it’s a fun experience dressing up goofy and getting to know the other candidates.” His partner, Anahi Moreno, also agreed, saying, “I think it’s really fun, the experience and dressing out, just overall getting to know the other candidates.”
The candidates shared overall how they felt about this experience so far. Although they are all hopeful of winning the crown, they all express that, in the end, they just want to have fun.
Unfortunately, due to the move to the new high school campus, there will be no rally, nor will there be performances of skits like there usually is. Although the rally won’t be happening, the basketball game in which our King and Queen will be crowned will still take place on Tuesday, February 4th, in the gym during halftime.
Be sure to vote for the next 2025 Homecoming King and Queen, and come out to see who gets the crown!
