Mental Health Awareness Month is an annual campaign held in May dedicated to educating the public about mental illness, hoping to reduce stigma and promote mental well-being. It was established in 1949 by Mental Health America (MHA) with the goals of connecting individuals with support groups, crisis services, and clinical treatment options. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) has many other national campaigns that promote education on mental illness, like Men’s Mental Health Month (June) and Suicide Prevention Awareness Month (September).
Dinuba High School celebrates this month through various activities, speakers, and competitions to show the support that is available through the school. Posters are in every corner of the school, reminding students they are not alone and encouraging them to maintain a positive mindset.
Dinuba’s photography class also holds a poster competition, picking the one that encapsulates the theme: “More Good Days Together,” reflecting on what a “good day” looks like to you. This year, there were 15 entries through Ms. Stephens’ Digital Photography class, which the DHS staff voted for. The winners are:
1st: Emily Pizana Castillo

2nd: Cecilia Tapia

3rd: Sherlyn Nucio Andrade

Congratulations to these amazing students!
During lunch on May 1st, 8th, and 14th, there were various activities like bracelet-making hosted by the NAMI club, a DHS band performance, Aware and Connect Resource Booth, and much more to demonstrate the support the DHS staff, counselors, psychologists, and administrators have for students. There are also posters made by DHS leadership members all around the school. On May 14th, as part of the lunch activities, Miss San Joaquin County, Olivia Harden, was a guest speaker advocating to end the stigma around athletes’ mental health.
