On February 5th, Dinuba High School competed in the annual National History Day (NHD) event, where students from other schools presented projects on historical themes. This year’s theme was “Reaction, Reform, and Revolution.” Students created boards, websites, documentaries, and performances about an event in history of their choosing related to the theme.
Students chose their projects, which included women’s fashion, smallpox, imperialism, jazz, and more. Students put a lot of work and effort into their projects. For example, sophomore Odessa Denny, whose project on the women’s revolution, stated: “An impact that can still be felt today is seeing any women working today, from cashiers to our librarians, they wouldn’t be able to work today without these women revolutionizing the world for us.”
History teacher Tracey Terran, the advisor who has overseen Dinuba High School’s National History Day (NHD) team for four years, expressed her pride and joy in NHD. “My favorite part is watching the students become really proud of their work in the end, push through challenges, and taking an idea and creating something that they’re really proud of.”
After displaying their projects, students are eligible to enter NHD and compete with other students in Tulare County. Students who win in their categories can then move on to state competitions and then nationals. This year, Dinuba High School had 42 eligible students who made it to state, and 20 who received scholarships for their hard work. These recipients include:
