Holiday music is everywhere. It’s played in malls, places like Starbucks and Walmart, and way, WAY too early on the radios. Usually, holiday music, more specifically speaking, Christmas music is played sometime in November.
Please don’t take this the wrong way, Christmas music has its hits and misses. Many popular songs can wait till December rolls around for them to start being played. It takes the fun out of listening to these songs by hearing them being played in months as early as November, maybe close to the end of October if people find themselves to be that daring.
Popular Christmas songs include:
- All I Want For Christmas Is You by Mariah Carey
- Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) by Darlene Love
- The Christmas Song (Merry Christmas to You) by Nat King Cole
- Last Christmas by Wham!
- Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree by Brenda Lee
- Feliz Navidad by José Feliciano
- Santa Claus Is Coming to Town by Bruce Springsteen
- It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year by Andy Williams
- Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas by Judy Garland
- Jingle Bell Rock by Bobby Helms
- Santa Tell Me by Ariana Grande
- God Rest Ye Merry by Pentatonix
- Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
In my opinion, though, yes, most of these songs, if not all of them, are classics, but they are highly overrated. I love holiday music, but not if I’m hearing the same songs repeated every time Christmas rolls around the corner.
It would be fun to hear new holiday songs rise from obscurity and be played on repeat now and then. Instead, it’s just the same repeated song every time. They’re great songs, love Mariah Carey and Brenda Lee, but come on.
Some songs have to retire, and if I’m being honest, the songs listed have to go. Great songs, but they have to go. There are many other good Christmas songs out there that get overshadowed by the overrated songs everyone tends to play around this time of the year.
There’s no reason why Mariah Carey’s song should be one of the top holiday songs every year once Christmas time rolls around. Holiday music in general, though festive and suitable for its recommended months, tends to get overrated and overplayed, making some, or even many, people lose the supposed fun, Christmas-y mood.
It’s supposed to be fun by the time Christmas comes, once a person can stand and dance with family or friends in the living room to Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree while having a fun time. Playing these songs in early/late November just completely ruins that for those who see it that way.
Let’s end playing Christmas jingles in November. Please.
