“Performative males” have recently blown up in popularity on social media. This phenomenon has been evolving usually on social media platforms like TikTok or Instagram, which has made others call this an “Epidemic.”
What are performative males?
“Performative males” are men who adopt progressive views for validation from others, whether male or female. They would use an aesthetic to appear emotionally mature, sensitive, and aligned with feminism. It’s the inauthenticity that makes these men what they are. That’s why they’re called “Performative males,” as they’re performing for people.
How do you spot them?
“Performative males” outfits are usually made up of thrifted/vintage graphic shirts, baggy jorts (long denim shorts), or baggy jeans. Accessories they are often seen with are tote bags, wired headphones, silver jewelry, and key chains. Many of them hang out at cafe shops, holding their iced oat milk matcha latte while reading their feminist literature. Though they may not even have actually opened the book, and just opened to a random page to appeal to others.
Why are there so many?
This style emerged to push back against the “alpha” culture (men who think they are hypermasculine). Many men realized that “alphas” were mostly misogynists and not liked, so they decided to switch it up. “Performative males” instead display emotional intelligence as they feel that it is often received positively by women. So to attract women, the “Performative males” decide to build their platforms on these values, but they may not even follow them in their actual everyday lives. This style of life is seen as a way to get validation for low effort work, as, instead of actually putting in the work for emotional growth, they find it easier to build a fake personality off of those ideas.
How does this affect women?
Some men may trauma dump early into the relationship to create a false intimacy, which can be used as a manipulation tactic to lower a woman’s guard, basically weaponizing their vulnerability. The persona these “Performative males” have created can sometimes be misogynistic. In social settings, these men may speak over women when discussing feminist issues because they believe they’re more informed than women. The disconnect these men have with the world can also make it harder for women to trust a partner’s genuine effort in the relationship.
Conclusion
“Performative males” may always be a thing, but the only thing to do about this “Epidemic” is to hold these men accountable for their actions. Calling out people who are being performative can help or maybe encourage them to truly grow emotionally instead of trying to create something that is fake. Of course, don’t discourage anyone if they’re finding new hobbies, whether it’s masculine or feminine. Always remember to be careful out there and to be aware of who you’re talking to.
